So, our little country of Wales consists of just over 3 million folk. We have had great success in mainstream sports such as Rugby, Football, Boxing and Cycling; however, what about in skateboarding? Who can young Welsh skaters look up to in order to see that you don’t have to live in Los Angeles or New York to be an amazing, memorable skateboarder?
Well, we have come up with a few examples of those Welsh skaters who have battled a severe lack of good skate spots, few skateparks around (We admit, it is getting better…) and the worst Welsh weather it can throw at us and still ended up as absolutely bonkers, talented shredders that we will always remember!
Matt Davies
Matt Davies, during the 1990s and 2000s reigned as one of the UK’s best skateboarders to show off. Matt still skates Cardiff’s Spit and Sawdust as well as other parks around the South Wales valleys these days; big pop, speed and technical ability combined, Matt stacks up as one of our greatest skaters then and now.
Pritchard & Dainton
The mad men from Cardiff and Newport: before Dirty Sanchez these boys were tearing up all of South Wales, with big sponsorships and notoriety known across Europe, these guys were truly heroes to many skaters during decades past.
Welsh Tommy
Welsh Tommy was all over Sidewalk Magazine (RIP) back in the day and still skates like no other today. Switch stance is no problem, we’re pretty sure he invented those slappy-noseslide spin-flip variants single-handedly. Tommy puts Port Talbot on the map for all the right reasons (We’ve heard that PT was inspiration for Mordorin Lord of the Rings, so it needs some help)
Sam Pulley and the Carve Wicked crew
Regulars across Cardiff, Newport and beyond, the Carve Wicked crew are bang-on like, see. Yeah, no explanation needed, just good fun skating.
Dylan Hughes
One of the most current parts on the list, which is enough to blow minds across the globe, this guy’s absolutely one of Wales’ most talented athletes full-stop.
Tech. Finesse. Speed. Gnar. He’s got it all. Skate-spots from Cardiff, Newport, Blaneau Gwent, Caerphilly all feature. There’s no excuse not to get inspired and find your local kerb at the very least!
